Four things, in order of how much they matter: the crystal itself, the cut, the frame, and the fit to the room.
- The crystal. Genuine Bohemian crystal is lead or high-index barium glass with a high refractive index. It disperses white light into visible spectral colour. Ordinary soda-lime glass does not, which is why cheap fixtures sparkle white instead of throwing rainbows.
- The cut. Hand-cutting produces facets with crisp arrises and slight variation between pieces. That variation is what makes a hand-cut chandelier look alive as you move past it. Moulded crystal is uniform and reads flat.
- The frame. Brass and bronze frames hold plating and carry weight better than plated steel. Ask what the arms are made of, not just what colour they are finished in.
- The fit. A superb fixture at the wrong scale is a mistake. Sizing rules are below, and they are worth following before you fall in love with a photograph.
Sizing: the rules designers actually use
- General rooms. Length (ft) + width (ft) = diameter (in). A 14 x 16 ft room wants roughly a 30 in fixture.
- Over a dining table. Fixture width = one-half to two-thirds of the table width. Hang the lowest element 30–36 in above the tabletop.
- Foyers and stairwells. Allow 2.5–3 in of fixture height per foot of ceiling height, and keep the bottom at least 7 ft above the floor. In a double-height entry, hang the piece so it is centred in the window when seen from outside.
- Bedrooms and bathrooms. Keep clearance above 7 ft, and place pendants over a tub or vanity rather than in the middle of the ceiling.
